Anne Hut to Waiau Pass Hut

Today was an easy walking day, with some of the best views on the trail so far. It was relatively flat through a really stunning valley with crystal clear rivers, big mountains, and an unbelievable amount of sandflies. We’re still not pushing big days and trying to give our feet lots of opportunities to dry out— we had a lot of creek crossings today so we’re back to wet feet. We just learned that the guy we met a couple of weeks ago trying to set the FKT on Te Araroa was stopped less than 100 miles from the end this week because of trench foot… seems like it’s a huge problem on this trail. 

Despite it being pretty cold this evening we couldn’t resist going for a swim/bath in the freezing cold but absolutely gorgeous river. This cute little hut has a wood stove so it was nice to come back and warm up in the hut. But I’m definitely missing our cozy wood stove back home!! 🔥
