I kicked a prickly pear and screamed. The barbs, man, they are so hard to pull out! A day that brought me to the brink. Truly, this is not a “long trail” in the sense that a thru-hiker thinks about a long trail. It is a collection of long forgotten wilderness routes that haven’t seen care or maintenance or attention in 15 years. They go through beautiful places, to be sure, and the Safford-Morenci trail that this day made up was an old route pre cars that miners used to get between these two mines. The BLM has restored much of it, but walking on pumice and volcanic rock all day will f*ck your feet up. Sub 2mph pace all day. And just because it is a route that goes, does not mean it goes clearly or is easy to follow. That feels important to add. Another hot day in the desert!
