Eagle River Nature Center: Albert Loop

Hiking Trail

Easy
2.99 mi
130 ft
A longer nature walk at Eagle River, with good chances at spotting wildlife.

This is the best trail for nature viewing at Eagle River Nature Center, as it covers a lot more ground than the 3/4-mile Rodak Trail. On Albert Loop you'll walk through lush temperate forest, full of wildflowers all summer long and changing colors in the fall. Strolling beside crystal-clear streams, beaver-dammed ponds, and a milky glacial river, you might see salmon in the water, moose in the forest, or a bald eagle in the air. From meadow clearings and from the riverbanks, you'll look up at snowcapped peaks of the Chugach towering thousands of feet overhead.

A portion of this trail also follows the historic Iditarod dogsled route. Some interpretive signs explain the area's history and a lot about the natural surroundings. The nature center and trails are accessible all year long, and they are groomed for cross country skiing in winter. However, the Albert Loop usually is usually closed from August through October due to bear activity along the Eagle River. That is when salmon run the river to spawn, and loads of bears come to feed on them.
