Kenneth Hahn Ridgeline

Hiking Trail

Easy
1.44 mi

Hike to the crest of a ridge for some of the finest views in the urban area.

Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area is a surprisingly green and spacious park, especially considering its location in the middle of an urban area. It’s a popular place for outdoor activities, especially hiking. Dirt trails extend beyond the picnic areas and grassy lawns to reach uncrowded viewpoints above the city.

The park straddles a prominent ridge, and this hike goes to the crest of it, granting elevated views in every direction of the compass. As mapped, it begins from the entrance on La Cienega Blvd on the west side of the park (there are other access points as well). From there, you’ll start uphill right away, on a wide path that leads to the shoulder of the ridge. It meets with a fire road in a clump of trees, then continues up the crest and flattens near the top. Views are good the whole way, but a couple of named overlooks come with shade structures and park benches.

You can make a little loop by returning through a patch of forest on the ridge. This brings welcome shade and a change of scenery before retracing your steps back down the hill. There are plenty of side trails and longer routes to explore as well, in case you're feeling up for more.
