An easy family-friendly hike through the grasslands along Wind Cave's visitor center.

The Prairie Vista Trail is a short and easy hike touring the rolling grasslands behind the visitor center. Wildlife sightings are common, with deer, elk, bison, pronghorn, and prairie dogs frequently seen roaming the hillsides. The park also rests near the geographic center of the continent, making it a permanent home to over 100 species of birds! Waysides along the trail also highlight the native wildlife and ecology that makes Wind Cave's dramatic landscape so breathtaking.

This hike originates near the visitor center, and signs are placed to lead you in the right direction. Water and restrooms are available nearby, and parking is available at the visitor center or at the trailhead, seen here. Paired with the [Elk Mountain Trail]( near the campground, these are the only two dog-friendly hikes in Wind Cave NP.

As one of the oldest national parks in America, the caves below the rolling grasslands are considered "one of the longest and most complex caves in the world," according to the park. [Guided cave tours]( are a popular option for those visiting Wind Cave, and the cave's natural entrance can even be seen just a short walk from the visitor center.
