8k race. Decent effort, nice course, really nice weather if even a little warm. Happy to be racing again. Concludes a three-month “test” to see how hard I could push the pace with the long-standing (3 yr) nerve injury and partial dysfunction in my right lower leg & foot. Overall, the workouts and few races exceeded my expectations (which were admittedly pessimistic) and I’m hopeful that I can continue to progress toward more competitive running. But nerves are definitely slow to recover and progress is not linear. Some of the sensory nerves won’t ever recover and partial numbness in my lower leg and foot is probably going to stay with me to the end of days. Getting back to race paces nearing 5:30/mile will require significant strength gains in my lower leg/foot/toes to have better dorsiflexion and plantar flexion. Gains will likely be slow, and in the meantime I’m getting older and will have to deal with all the other things that aging runners contend with. But that’s fine…I am patient and I’m just happy to be able to run (and race!).
