After taking an 8 year hiatus from the marathon format and putting off Millinocket specifically (stating year after year that “next year I’ll do the full) next year finally came! After watching Chauna, Dan, and Kathleen crush the Detroit Marathon only 8 weeks ago I decided to up my entrance from the 1/2 to the full! To be clear it was not a great idea, but for such a fun race that I look forward to every year it was perfect. The race was very much a tale of 2 halves. Race day was blustery clocking in at 0°F with sustained headwinds up the golden road towards Katahdin. My intent was to run 9min/mile splits and drop down every 5 miles. I teamed up with a group of people and we ran the first half closer to 8 min/mi. Dropped my glove and had to return to find it (hence the extra mileage) on the first lap. Lap 2 was right back into the wind blaster but now with sweaty clothes and I started to get concerned about hypothermia. The hills started to get to me and I started to feel light cramps coming on. Exactly at mile 22 both legs seized with cramps and absolutely shut down. Quad, calves, and hamstrings locked up like rocks and I couldn’t move for almost 2 minutes. I didn’t have electrolytes to stave them off and I was forced to walk until I could shuffle/jog. A) goal was to finish, B) goal was sub 4 hours, and C) goal was sub 3:49 so that it would not be my slowest marathon. After hobbling in to town I got 2/3 goals! Good enough for me and I learned A LOT on this run! Time to make some overhauls before the next one!!!
